Garage door watch

A tilt sensor on the door panel reports open or closed, and nudges you when it's left open after dark. About $46 in parts.

Parts

  • ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 (N8R8) C-001$19.95
  • MPU-6050 6-DoF Accelerometer and Gyroscope P-004$12.95
  • BH1750 Ambient Light Sensor V-005$4.50
  • USB-C 5.1 V 3 A Power Supply E-005$8.74

Parts $46.14 · powered by the USB-C 5.1 V 3 A Power Supply

  • Note: The USB-C 5.1 V 3 A Power Supply's plug (usb-c-v1) doesn't fit the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 (N8R8)'s port (usb-micro-b-v1). You'll need an adapter cable, which isn't in the parts list.

Wiring

The volts are the parts' own: the USB-C 5.1 V 3 A Power Supply puts out 4.845–5.355 V, and the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 (N8R8)'s regulator makes the 3.251–3.349 V rail its GPIO and most of the sensors run from. Which header pin each lead lands on is our suggestion — the registry has no pin map, and nothing here has been wired on a bench.

Power the board off while you plug anything in. Every connector here is keyed: if it doesn't click in easily, turn it over rather than forcing it.

Readings

What this build sends: one column per channel its parts read or drive, with the unit the capability carries. The values and times below are sample data.

Sample data, one row every 5 min, in the shape these channels would arrive in — not a reading from a built device.
